It’s so easy to make a “missing the forest for the trees” cliche but I can’t help think that’s exactly what the national dialogue of torture ended up doing. And that’s a damn shame.
Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal don’t take a stance either way, and regardless of whether or not waterboarding was used to glean information on Osama bin Laden’s whereabouts, torture was at one point a standard part of the CIA’s protocol. Zero Dark Thirty simply says ‘deal with it’ while analyzing the psychological and physical toll the operation placed on its conspirators.
