This week’s a bit of a link-o-rama.
Hey, at least I stayed true to my promise of more Cage. Still not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.
9/30/12 Looper (2012)
10/1/12 The House of the Devil (2009)
Ominous, ominous, ominous. Were you expecting otherwise? Look at that title: The House of the Devil. All you need to know (and later discover) is right there. Director Ti West’s propensity for the slow burn is once again on display, but his script hammers home the Satanic stuff too early, and too often. Money-hungry Sam (Jocelin Donahue) is in for a rough babysitting gig, accepting the last minute job of caring for Tom Noonan’s aging mother. Never mind that Noonan creepily warns grandma is plenty mobile on her own (yeesh) and that Sam would do best to stick with television and delivery pizza. She does, for a while at least, and it makes for that same sphincter-tightening tension from West’s Innkeepers. This time around though, everything’s just too obvious. Here’s a creepy mansion in the middle of nowhere! Look at my strange cane! And my wife’s creepy skull brooch! A late moment involving sedatives and pure shock recalls Lynch’s infamous ‘Winkie’s Diner’ sequence, but Devil’s final revelation is anything other than surprising, much less compelling.
